We specialize in speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, paranormal fiction, and magical realism).

We are currently accepting cozy mystery and sweet/clean romance in addition to our usual genres. This list is based on the experience and expertise of our editors.

It is important to use an editor who has experience in your genre and understands your audience.

**We are not accepting horror at this time.

**We do not provide editorial services for "spicy", "steamy", or explicit content.

Manuscript Critique

$0.005/word ($250/50k words)

A manuscript critique is similar to a beta read, but far more extensive.


You will receive in-line or chapter notes (author's choice) on:

  • What's working

  • What isn't working

  • Chapter by chapter notes

  • Big picture 'final thoughts' after I have finished reading

  • Actionable steps to improve your writing

  • Recommendations for your next round of edits


Why this isn't a developmental edit:

  • A manuscript critique gives broad suggestions rather than reshaping your story.

  • This is a one-time service, rather than a back and forth dialogue.

  • Developmental edits cost more and will sometimes be recommended as a next step, but it is not a service that we currently offer.

Copy Editing

$0.005/word ($250/50k words)

Our editing philosophy is to leave as little mark as possible, ensuring the author's voice remains untouched while clarifying meaning and correcting errors. It is our job to ensure that the reader receives the story as the author intended it.

Knight Sky Publishing uses the Chicago Manual of Style, which is preferred by most fiction publishers. In addition to suggested revisions, you will receive a style sheet upon request. This is specific to your work and will be useful if you choose to write sequels.

It is best practice for authors to hire both a copy editor and a proofreader. We recommend this to all of our clients. Proofreaders will generally catch formatting issues as well as typos!

Book Formatting

$30 for novellas, $40 for novels up to 100k words

We will format your novel or novella for wide publication.

**Please note: some distributors have a built-in formatter. If you’re unsure, it is ok to reach out and ask — we don’t want you to book a service you don’t need!

What you get:

  • Vendor specific epub files, along with a print-ready PDF

  • Upon request, minor tweaks for each vendor and format. This typically means changing links in the back matter, swapping out the cover if you have a different one for print versions, and other similarly quick changes.

  • You will receive up to six versions of your files for the different vendors and formats.

  • Full ownership of all files and versions -- this is your work and hiring a formatter does not change that. The finished version is assumed to be for commercial use.
